Qatar will make history when it submits a bid for the 2022 football World Cup on May 14.

This will be the Middle East's first attempt at securing the tournament, to the Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, in Zurich, reports The National.

A vote in December will decide the respective 2018 and 2022 World Cups hosts, but the submission slots seem certain to stoke an already escalating ante, the paper said.

Australia, England, Japan, Netherlands/Belgium, Russia, Spain/Portugal and United States are bidding for the 2018 or 2022 finals.

The UAE poured more than Dh32 billion (US$8.7bn) into foreign aid between 2000 and 2008, the agency responsible for tracking humanitarian contributions has said.
