Sources close to the Hollywood production team for Furious 7 have told The National that, contrary to previous indications, the movie will not be having its global premiere in Abu Dhabi.

There was some hope that Abu Dhabi would be rolling out the red carpet at the end of next month, ahead of the film’s global release on the first weekend in April, after a team touched down in the UAE last year to look at possible premiere locations, including Vox, Yas Mall and Emirates Palace.

The premiere was initially planned for Abu Dhabi, where what have to be some of the film’s most fantastical scenes was shot last year. Sources tell us that Diesel’s long-term partner Pamola Jimenez is allegedly pregnant, and due to deliver at around the same time as the anticipated premiere. Diesel, sources say, has refused to hold the premiere outside of Los Angeles for this reason.

A quick trawl around US ticket websites finds that a number are indeed selling tickets for the F7 red carpet premiere in LA, with a “TBA” 30 March date, at an unconfirmed location.

We contacted twofour54, the movie’s local production team, who stressed that since the Abu Dhabi premiere had never been confirmed by the movie’s producers in the first place, they were unable to offer comment on its current status.

There has been no official word from Diesel’s camp either, about the premiere or Jimenez’s pregnancy. This is not entirely surprising, however. The Guardians of the Galaxy star, who was the highest paid actor in Hollywood last year with a reported US$96 million (Dh353m) income, according to People With Money magazine, is notoriously secretive about his private life. In 2006 he told World Entertainment News Network: “I’m not gonna put it out there on a magazine cover like some other actors. I come from the Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro code of silence.”

Diesel and Jimenez stunned Hollywood observers in 2008 when they hid Jimenez’s pregnancy for nine full months, and then managed to keep the birth secret for two months after the baby was born.
