Work Permit proecssing might take forever

ebdoosh's picture

Don't be surprised for any delay. I was offered the position in ADCO in September 2009. Sent all required documents ( it's a long process) in October with an assurance the work permit should be ready within 2 weeks and ADCO requested me to resign from current company. I told them I wouldn't resign till I got the work permit. Luckily I didnt then as I just received the workk permit this week!! That's 3 months vs 2 weeks. LOL.
And also I think the signing of the contract is to be done only when you are in Abu Dhabi reporting your first day working not prior. This is my current situation. I have requested the work contract even a draft sent to me but they refused as I could only see this paper on my first day working in ADCO. They just sent me the package info & benefits by correspondence. Was worried af first but the headhunter assured me that ADCO is a very reliable company. I bought that words as I was there in ABU Dhabi during the interview - been in ADCO building, met the managers/HR, etc etc. Plus I got a friend working for ADCO currently and selling all those good stuffs to me. LOL. So it's not a bogus company at least.
As per your another offer from SABIC, try to negotiate more if you can. Remember there is a double standard in term of salary in UAE. If you are white, most likely you will be paid double as compared to those poor asian.
Whatever it is... Good Luck to us!!

Astroguy,

I really dont know what the proper procedure is.
I am currently living in Australia but my degree is from USA.
So I had my certificate verified by Public Notary first ( with a fee of course), and then Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade attested it. Only then the UAE Embassy in Australia attested it.
So I reckon similar process applies in your case? Probably you need to get your cert verified by a notary, and then by Malaysian Foreign Affairs and lastly to UAE embassy? Check with them again bro. You should ask brother SIF as he applied it from Malaysia.
Good Luck!!

Bros, The weather in AD is

syedfariz's picture

Bros,

The weather in AD is superb nowadays. Breezy and sometimes can be quite cold. Similar to Genting.

Anyway, I can see the rental in Abu Dhabi is coming down. I have checked out some areas but mostly not in the city. I think it's better to live outside the city as well bcoz parking is a nightmare in the city. Also, much of the properties in the city are apartments. You can still find decent accomodation in Raha Beach, Officers City, Al Reef MBZ city. These places are approximately 20-30km from the corniche. But if you are willing to travel to Dubai everyday, they have plenty of nice villas at cheaper prices. You may also find accommodation in Shamkha, Shawameikh, Mafraq, Shahama but these places are a bit far, about 40km++. The problem if u stay outside the city is transportation. Without driving license and a car, it's hard for u to move around. You can't rent a car, if u have gotten your work visa. U got to take the license before buying or renting a car. Anyway, Abu Dhabi is a nice place. I met many Malaysians here thus far.

Thanks for update

ebdoosh's picture

SIF,
Thanks for the update. Looking forward to be there mid March. The places you mentioned above if not mistaken are new areas. I saw some adverts onlince. Big & new houses/villas however I noticed they havent got air conditioner installed yet.Its gonna be bugger in summer. Did you ever get a chance to survey houses in Mangrove Village, Mohammed Zayed City & Madinat Khaifa A ? I heard those places are good for family.
I wish I could rent in Dubai and dont mind commuting to work however ADCO wont allow residing outside of AD.Bugger..
I am bepuzzled now when you said you cant drive/rent a car without having to have UAE driving licence first. Isnt it bad for tourist?
Oklah SIF, you get the licence first and then you could drive me to Dubai on weekend. LOL
Have you researched on the school yet? Coz our kids about the same age. so we can enroll them in the same school. Just a suggestion...
Is your family there already or will follow suit later?

Brother, Indeed those are new

syedfariz's picture

Brother,

Indeed those are new areas, banyak locals yg lepak sini. Still if u have car, this may be your good budget accommodation. 3-4 beds less than 160k, and u may still bargain. I've checked out some of the villas here. They are huge man! and sometimes can be too much. Only set back is, your family may find difficulties to groceries like Carefour etc. The nearest I think around Al Raha and Khalifa. What they have are only the little supermarket, groceries. Pasal aircond tu not really true. Most of the houses do have aircond broher.

Mangrove. MBZ City, Khalifa A are nice place. Personally I prefer Mangrove, around 210K for 3 bed. Al Raha and Khalifa A also quite nice. Especially Khalifa A, where they have good schools like Yasmina, etc. I have checked out some schools here. Surely we can get the kids in the scool no problem, but depending on where u and duduk la.

Tourist don't get residence visa bro. This is only applicable to Residence Visa holder. Once u have your residence visa ready, u can't drive with your international license. FYI, I just got my RV today. The next thing is to get a license and house.

My family will only join me in April. Now my bank is working on my family's visa, then only my maid's visa. Plasma 42inc Samsung about 1.9K+ in Carrefour. Just saw them 2 days ago.

Ok bros keep in touch

SIF

Thu, 11/02/2010 - 19:56

You are very resourceful!!

ebdoosh's picture

Thank you SIF,
Lega sikit dengar pasal the houses. If I can get rental < $200k in Mangrove, MBZ or Khalifa A, then I would choose to live there. But never know as I am yet to be there and look around. Since I am gym junkies so I would prefer to live in MBZ as I heard the first fitness first gym will be opened there...LOL..I dont worry much about the house but more on the school. I saw something about Yasmina's but the fees quite premium. Worse comes to worst if I choose Yasmina's, then I have to top up on the fees as ADCO kasi Edu allowance ciput sangat..LOL
But keep us update if you got good school to enroll your kids in. Definitely I prefer good school with good English medium particularly British or Australian as my kids pretty much comfy with Australian system.
Driving licence...oklah I tunggu u dapat your licence dulu...
Defly Plasma TV there much cheaper than the one in Australia so wont bother buying TV from here.
Oh congrats on your RV!!

Guys

Yes Im sure u can find plenty of houses below 200k. Gym don't worry too much. There are many fitness centres here. Your ADCO office pun nice, it's by the Corniche near my office as well. What I suggest, you don't go for too expensive house, so u can cover some for the school fees. How much ADCO's education allowance? Too bad, u can't live outside AD. If not u can explore options outside AD as well.

SIF,

It doesnt work that way. If I get cheaper house, I cant keep the rest of the allowance.I have to return the remaining balance to ADCO. It sucks isnt it?LOL
So might as well spend out the whole allowance and live comfortably.
Astroguy, I believe the same case with your package. Check with your company.
ADCO only provides $20k per year per kid. At least there is something rather than nothing. That's why after knowing this situation, I have asked ADCO to increase my basic salary so that it could cover the Education allowance & annual air ticket ( which is also not provided) to Malaysia. So pretty much I am covered.

I guess you are right on the housing allowance. I have signed the employment contract with ADMA and they are processing the work permit.. but now I am reconsidering to withdraw it as I have just received a relatively better offer from a local company...

How do you think ADMA would react if I tell them on my intention to withdraw? Ii think it is too late for me to negotiate on the salary as I had already signed the contract.... I was quite desperate then as my business was winding up...

Up to you

ebdoosh's picture

Astroguy,

Based on your package for G14, you got relatively not bad offer I reckon. Also bear in mind it's tax free. If you got better offer from local company, how much % more, is it 200% more?

Remember any income in Malaysia is taxable. The more you earn, the more is the tax. I used to work for one of leading oil & gas service companies in Malaysia for couple of years so I know pretty much salary grade there. Back then, couple of years ago, I was earning monthly income RM20k-RM30k plus car & house allowance provided, medical & children education covered. But after the tax & EPF, ciput jea dapat. But it is really up to you as you know your situation well.
If you check the standard salary as published in SPE, what you are receiving is pretty standard salary grade for Middle east countries.

You MIGHT get away legally if withdrawing from ADMA unless the legal team hunts you down in Malaysia which is highly unlikely. But ethically, I think is not quite right as an agreement is a proof of pledge and commitment. Also it will give a bad impression of you and our country as well. Imagine if some other Malaysians do the same thing you are planning to do i.e withdrawing, believe me in the future they will impose strict rule & procedure in hiring Malaysian.

But it is again really up to you as whatever reasons behind it. If the risk is too high to take by proceeding with this employment, there is always an emergency brake. Jangan lupa solat istikharah... Good Luck

Hi Mohammad,

Does the 31kAED already include your housing allowance?
ADCO and ADMA are both subsidiaries of ADNOC, you may purchase your own properties subject to local government approval etc, but I dont think they have any scheme neither allowances on this.

I suggest that you negotiate all the money that you need into your salary like Ebdoosh did.

Brother Mohammad,
congratulation on the offer!!Looking forward to seeing you also in AD. The salary you told us is within the range of G15. However I am not so sure if it is wise to reveal and compare each and everyone salary here as I am afraid it will create more damage than good. Especially the one who receives the lowest income for the same grade will be so disheartened and might loose somewhat excitement working in a new company and in a new environment. Imagine if someone works back to back with you , doing the same work and the same thing but receving higher salary than you're, I am sure you can't stay cool can you?

Please bear in mind that we are not machines which are made of same standard and mould thus a product of a cookie cutter. We are human with different character, personality, experience, capability, & experience - these were judged during the interviews and selections. Plus everyone has personal agenda of why he moves and chooses to work in AD. I have a personal motive pursuing career in AD, and believe me it's not the salary. Look up my profile and you might pick up some clues. If not, ask me when you meet me personally in AD.

COngratulations to all of you for being accepted to work in AD!!That's all I can say...

Hi All I am just sharing my 5

Astroguy's picture

Hi All

I am just sharing my 5 days experience in Abu Dhabi..

1- Employment visa/work permit - document issued by the goverment to allow foreign employment
- get a copy from your employer
- show the copy at the visa counter at the airport imigration and get your original document, then the retina scan

* get a local mobile no. ASAP.

2 - Residence Visa - issued by the goverment to allow you to stay as residence in Abu Dhabi
- deal thru your company - give them your passport and original work permit
- do medical check up at government hospital (your company will arrange)
It may take between 1-2 weeks to get the Residence Visa (RV)

3 - You could open a bank account only after you get your RV.

4 - You may need an international driving license for car rental.

5 - temporary accomodation - suggest that you discuss carefully with your employer on the duration of temporary accomodation. For big companies like ADMA - there are many depts and all are working in silos. Even for HR - there are recruitment dept and Employee Relations Dept.
The recruitement will book you for max 3 days as temporary hotel accomodation. Then they will pass you over to Employee Relations.. etc... etc. So you better sort out the duration for temp accomodation. and you need to find a house ASAP.

6 - Register with driving academy and get a local driving license.

7 - Get a car..

8 - Good luck!

Hi All,more info sharing

Astroguy's picture

Hi All,

more info sharing especially for those who are joining ADNOC group of companies.

- accomodation - be prepared to fork out your own money for payment of:-
* booking deposit (non refundable in case of cancelation) - you may need to pay booking deposit to get quotation. ranges between 5k to 10k.
* commission fees for the property agent. Normal commmission fee/ key money ranges up to 5% of the annual property rental rate.
- both charges will not be covered by the company

any differences between the actual flat rental and your entitlement will not be reimbursed by the company ie:
- if your entitlement is 200k per year.. and u manage to get a 150k flat..
then the balance of 50k will not be reimbursed.
- if you want a 250k flat, then of course you need to pay the difference.

- Residence visa
your residence visa might take more than 2 weeks, until you get one, then you are virtually an alien.
- unable to open a bank account
- unable to get a local driving license nor use international driving license
- you cannot move in to your own house/flat as you will not be able to register for utilities
-

Lastly - it is so hard to get a taxi here... !!! and most drivers are new .. they are as lost as you hahaha....

good luck!

Hidden cost

ebdoosh's picture

Astroguy,

re-house booking & commision fees - they are real buggers!! Is there any way to get around it without having to pay those charges. These people are really making money off the thin air.

Have you got any candidate for your future residence?

I was planning to get an international license prior to departure to AD. But then if I cant use it there, then what's the point of getting one. Can you confirm that? Then I shouldnt be bothered to get the international license.

hi ebdoosh, on house booking

Astroguy's picture

hi ebdoosh,

on house booking and commissioning fees - you might get lucky if you can deal directly with the landlord, thus avoiding any of these hidden costs...

it can take months to get a good accomodation to your living standard.., then ADNOC might remove you from your hotel and give you just 3000 DHS a month to live on your own..

it is a cut throat situation on the housing, as the agent will increse the price due to allegedly a better offer/bid from other prospective tenant unless you pay the booking fee...

drvg license- I suggest that you go ahead with the international driving license. You may still be able to drive as a tourist and with a copy of your temp visa & passport, until you get a RV.

I suggest that you get the local drving license ASAP, then you can stay at better house outside of the city... and cheaper tooo

good luck!

Salam to All!

AUH Again's picture

As many others in this thread I have accpted a job offer and hoping to be back in Abu Dhabi (relocating from Riyadh) in a couple of months time. 'Back' because I have lived in Abu Dhabi from 2001 to 2005 so a sort of familiar with the city but I believe things have changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks aloy Ebdoosh, Astroguy, triple_edge, and Mohammad for all the useful discussion which can extremely helpful in issues associated with relocation to Abu Dhabi.

Just some more info, if would you like to share your experiences for housing search. Personally I have a max limit of AED 200k p.a. to be paid by company directly to land lord and I would need 3 BR with no schooling requirement, prefer to live in a relatively quiet and peaceful area which seems like more available on the mainland (Khalifa, Al Raha). Any suggestions of best value for money options and/or do's and dont's on this venture. Additional value will be ameneties like swimming pool, gym etc...?

Hope to catch up with some of you when I am in Abu Dhabi and thanks for your help in advance.

Love Abu Dhabi!

Interview Adnoc (From Malaysia)

pingu female's picture

Salam,

I am Malaysia citizen and currently staying at Sabah, Malaysia. Today, i got an email from hr@adnocc.com regarding interview as the position above. The interview will be held at Conference Hall at ADNOC Abu Dhabi. The interview letter had state that the company 100% responsible to sponsor all candidate to attend this interview scheduled including Visa, Airfare, Feeding, Accommodation, Airport pick up and Local transportation, with one condition Refundable security deposit US D480.00 must be paid by candidate to attend this interview, but it will be refund after the interview. I'm kind of suspicious regarding this, but if this is true i`m interest to attend this interview. Is anyone have same experience about this especially candidate from Malaysia? Kindly advise
